My name is Jesse Taylor and I am a woodworker based in Ashland Oregon. It took me some time to realize that woodworking is my true calling. I'm naturally reserved, extremely detail-oriented, and I inherited a strong work ethic from my father. Woodworking runs in my family, and I've found that it's deeply connected to my identity. I believe that practicality and aesthetics go hand in hand when you take the time to craft intentionally.
I spent most of my twenties traveling from place to place chasing a dream I thought I wanted in places I didn’t belong with a feeling that I had to be someone I truly wasn’t. I lived in some big cities and was given some great opportunities, but I felt little purpose outside of myself. in 2019, I wound up right back in the place I couldn’t wait to leave when I was 18, realizing that thing I was searching for was exactly where I left it and the only thing that changed was me. I now feel a deep connection to what I get to do every day. I build custom furniture and am lucky enough to live in an area rich with native tree species and local suppliers that have a great selection of hardwoods. I am passionate about learning about and working with new woods and will do whatever I can to find exactly what you have in mind, even if it means a drive. I feel a deep connection to what I do and find beauty in wood that would typically be discarded because of its defects. The analogy feels personal to me, and it gives me a motive to turn those trees into something beautiful that can live on as a piece of furniture rather than a piece of firewood.
I buy locally and will never jeopardize what I believe in to save money on the furniture I make, which means that my prices will never be able to compete with stores like West Elm, Wayfair or Ikea. My target audience will always be those who are looking for a custom, heirloom quality piece of furniture to fit your home and want to support small businesses over the big corporations that mass produce cheap products. If the story of the wood itself isn’t enough, the story of one man putting his full attention and intention into everything he makes can put you at ease. I will never let a product leave my shop that I’m not satisfied with and that I don’t think will last a lot longer than the person I’m making it for.
