This huge cutting board is the first I've ever made from this beautiful Koa wood that my dad brought me back from Hawaii a few months back. Koa is a highly revered and sacred wood native to Hawaii and very hard to find anywhere else. It was originally used by the warriors of King Kamehameha the Great in conjunction with shark teeth and marlin's bills to make weapons for hand to hand combat. The wood would be so highly regarded that for years it was prohibited for anyone but the Hawaiian monarchs and ali’i royalty class to possess it. Koa became a significant staple in Hawaiian culture as it was used to make the first canoes, fishing boats and sailboats allowing the islands to be traversed by locals. It was also the wood used to make the first surfboards and many household goods like bowls and utensils. This is truly a one-of-one board and may be the only Koa board I get to sell in my shop. Part of me wants to hang onto this one, but more of me wants it to go to a good home that will appreciate the history behind the piece and get a lifetime of use out of it.
